Confirmation

“Faith is to believe what you do not see. The reward of faith is to see what you believe.” - St. Augustine

Deepening Your Walk with Christ

Confirmation is a sacred moment in the life of a believer. It’s a time to make a mature commitment to the faith and to receive a fresh work of the Holy Spirit through the bishop’s prayer and laying on of hands.

The Catechism puts it this way:

“In confirmation, God strengthens the work of the Holy Spirit in me for his daily increase in my Christian life and ministry.”

What Is Confirmation?

In Anglican practice, Confirmation is often called a rite or institution—a visible sign of God’s grace that deepens our life in Christ. It’s closely connected to baptism, but marks a new level of personal ownership and spiritual maturity.

Though it has historically been offered to teens baptized as infants, today it’s open to any baptized Christian of any age who has not yet been confirmed and desires to grow in Christ.

“Confirmation is the sacrament of maturity… Baptism highlights our birth into the Body of Christ; Confirmation strengthens us to grow.”

How Do I Get Confirmed?

There are two steps:

1. Take the CtK Confirmation Course

This eight-week theological class explores key foundations of the Christian faith, including the Ten Commandments, the Lord’s Prayer, and the Creed.

Questions and curiosity are encouraged.

2. Attend the Bishop’s Annual Visit

Only a bishop can administer Confirmation. During the service, each confirmand receives the laying on of hands and prayer. It’s a deeply meaningful and Spirit-filled moment in the life of faith.

Confirmation is also required for some church leadership roles—like serving on the Vestry.

Already Confirmed?

If you’ve already been confirmed but want to renew your commitment to Christ, you can participate in a rite called Reaffirmation, also administered by the bishop during the same service.

If you’ve been confirmed in another denomination and wish to transfer that into the Anglican tradition, the bishop can receive you through a rite called Reception.
